Fili the Dwarf

My drawing of Fili the Dwarf

Those of you who've seen the Hobbit know that there are 13 dwarves in the movie. For those of you who haven't... there are 13 dwarves in the movie. Randome LOTR info, Fili is older brother to Kili, and both dwarves are nephews to Thorin Oakenshield.

I will say that this is one of those drawings that I had FUN working on. Some drawings drag on, and on, and on, while some drawings are lots of fun to sit down and add a whack load of detail. This was one of the latter.
I think I put over 16 hours into this dwarf, which is getting to be my new standard time that it takes me to do a human portrait. But because of all that hair (and this isn't the hairiest dwarf!) I had to be more careful with the lighting and how much contrast I had to put in. Which pieces to leave white, and which ones to darken completely.
All-in-all I like how everything turned out. And hopefully this won't be my last drawing of dwarves. Thorin was going to be next, but I couldn't find a picture I wanted to do that hasn't been done a hundred times already.
If you would like to purchase a print of this drawing, you can do so here.

Oh...heheh. I didn't even realize that. Being the computer blog-bug that I am, I can be pretty quick when it comes to catching a post.

(...hmm. In other words: I don't have much of a life...)

Ah, anyway God bless!

A painting? :D

Ok, so after seeing the hobbit again in theaters today, I decided I have to do a dwarf. I think I'll do Kili, because he has the, well the shorter beard. And he's my favorite. I'm not sure I want to take on a huge lop of hair just yet (although I guess it is a bit like Solomon Old's hair) :P

At least most of the dwarves' hair is a bit neater than Gimli's Huge mop. :)

A digital painting =)

Sweet!! I absoutely LOVE the Hobbit =D
Haha, I used to have the same problem with hair and beards. You'll get it ;) Kili is a good one to do, definitely! I'd love to see it when it's done =D

Haha, yeah, thankfully most of them do have it neat... except for Gloin, Gimli's dad. Like father like son (in a good way)

Agh! I keep looking at this! Eye magnet is what it is. The Bead things on his beard are perfect, the sword hult is crazy, and his eyes look so real. Please do another dwarf!
Now to get back to Kili...

Thanks Leauphaun!
Yeah, I was surprised at how much better I got as well, but I pray that I don't become too prideful about the talent I've been given by God, and I hope that I can use it for His glory!

Leauphaun said...

You're welcome!!!

Same here. I know how hard it is to not be prideful about something like artwork. Especially when it's clear that it's a God-given gift. Which, I think, makes it almost harder to be humble about it. Though at the same time, it's easier because we know that it's not something that was given to us by accident :)

For a while there, I was putting my value of who I was as a person in my artwork. Now I realize that people are my friends for me, not for my artwork, and my value as a person is in how God thinks of me. And He loves me as I am, even if I didn't have this talent!

It's good that you've already acknowledge that you don't want to be prideful, but that you want it to be for God. Something that I've found that helps me not be to prideful about my artwork, is that I don't bring up the subject of my artwork when I'm around people, but I let a family member, or a friend tell other people about my talent. That way I'm not flaunting it in other people's faces, and I'm not saying "Look at how good I am!". But when people ask for you to show them the latest piece, you can do it with a humble heart, because you're not looking for praise :) I hope that that in itself doesn't sound prideful...

You truly have a gift, Regollin. God has given it to you, and you're now walking on a path He has set for you =D

Leauphaun, this drawing is great, and its great that you are not too prideful about your talent. The eyes look very lifelike. I actually used this drawing as a reference to try to draw my own (sorry forgot to ask) and I posted my drawing on my blog, the drawing budgie. Could you take a look and give me some critiques?? Thanks!
